Overview
In alignment with the university's policy and the College of Applied Sciences' commitment to offering distinctive and unique programs to meet the demands of the local job market and contribute to the development and growth of Palestinian society, the college introduced the Applied Chemistry program in the academic year 2010/2011.
Recognizing the significant shortage of qualified professionals in fields related to this program, particularly in chemistry and its applications across various industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, polymers, leather, and detergents, there arose a critical need to bridge this gap. This need became more apparent due to the low quality of industrial products, failure to adhere to health and safety standards, as well as the underperformance and ineffectiveness of relevant industrial institutions. Moreover, the evident harm to the environment, including air, water, and soil, within the Palestinian region further underscored the urgency for establishing the Applied Chemistry program within the College of Applied Sciences at Palestine Polytechnic University.
Vision:
Our program aspires to evolve into a dynamic entity capable of cultivating diverse academic collaborations both internally and externally. We aim to forge partnerships with governmental, private, and service sectors, offering essential consultancy services. Furthermore, we envision the creation of an advanced hub for research and development, poised to cater to all sectors comprehensively within the field of chemistry. Our horizontal and vertical expansion plans include the introduction of graduate programs spanning various domains, thereby facilitating advanced scientific research across contemporary fields.
Advantages of This program:
Recent evaluation studies of education programs in Palestine have highlighted a critical issue: engineering education does not effectively align with the demands of the local industry. There's a pressing need to establish connections between the industrial sector and universities to bridge this gap. The focus on academic programs within applied sciences, such as the Applied Chemistry program, emerges as an important link between higher education and industry. This program's primary goal is to produce technical professionals who are well-suited for the specific needs of the local Palestinian job market, particularly in the southern region.
Consequently, the Applied Chemistry program at Palestine Polytechnic University stands out from similar programs in other universities. Unlike programs that are solely focused on engineering (e.g., chemical engineering) or pure chemistry, our program offers a unique advantage to its graduates in the labor market.
Objectives
The program's curriculum is meticulously designed to fulfill the following objectives:
General Objectives:
To actively contribute to the betterment of the Palestinian community, and the wider regional community, by producing graduates who are exceptionally skilled and competitive. These graduates will have the capability to leverage contemporary and advanced knowledge in chemistry to foster a knowledge-based economy. This includes their effective integration into the labor market, whether in educational roles or in pursuit of academic, research, professional, or productive accomplishments. These endeavors extend to both the public and private sectors.
Special Objectives:
- To serve the local community by equipping it with highly qualified professionals who can build and advance its institutions. These professionals will actively partake in the pursuit of sustainable development across various sectors and help the community attain its objectives.
- To equip the local community with experts capable of addressing contemporary challenges in specialized fields and actively contributing to their resolution.
- To facilitate communication and collaboration between higher education institutions and the local community, thereby promoting cooperation across various sectors.
- To foster the development and augmentation of essential resources for scientific research in specialized areas.
- To play an essential role in realizing the development vision at both the college and university levels.
Outcomes
Upon completing the requirements for a bachelor's degree in Applied Chemistry, graduates are expected to:
- Cultivate the theoretical and practical knowledge gained across various chemistry and biology fields through contemporary resources.
- Apply theoretical knowledge to critically comprehend and interpret facts, observations, natural phenomena, and chemical inventions, providing inventive solutions to encountered problems.
- Utilize acquired skills to understand the foundations of local and international chemical industries, contributing to their enhancement and devising suitable solutions to arising challenges.
- Explore innovative investment avenues based on chemical skills, promoting economic growth, tackling unemployment, and exhibiting competitiveness in the job market.
- Strategically plan and establish self-owned businesses or participate in lucrative modern ventures while upholding principles of effective management and development.
- Utilize chemical knowledge to devise practical solutions for pressing environmental concerns, including financial sustainability-oriented innovations like paper recycling and addressing water pollution and energy crises.
- Teach theoretical and laboratory chemistry in schools, establish and manage safe laboratories, and instil principles of public safety in students.
- Engage in roles within the production and service sectors, overseeing the production and quality control of both imported and domestically manufactured goods. Offer consultancy services to governmental bodies and private sectors, contributing expertise to research and development endeavors, and generating innovative solutions.
- Pursue advanced studies at local, regional, and international universities, specializing in applied chemistry, without the necessity for remedial courses. Successfully complete educational requirements in various pure chemistry subjects with a minimal number of remedial courses, ensuring smooth academic progression.
- Uphold the ethical standards of the profession across all work fields. Prioritize public safety, refraining from activities that may offend individuals or harm public health, the environment, and living organisms. Maintain credibility in composing technical reports and recommendations, while adhering to universally accepted scientific research ethics.
Career Opportunities for Graduates
- Supervisory roles in local factories across sectors like pharmaceuticals, plastics, mining, and food industries.
- Quality and product analysis supervisors in local factories.
- Technical assistance roles in industrial consulting firms.
- Support for businesses engaged in the trade of foreign materials.
- Employment in government positions related to industry, environment, and energy.
- Research assistantships in applied and development projects, as well as non-governmental research organizations.
