Program Overview:
As the number of students at local universities, community colleges, and institutes is increasing, and as a result of the continuing growth of universities in programs and majors, the need has sharply increased for advanced degrees in mathematics. To meet this demand, PPU launched the mathematics master program in the year 2006, to contribute in fostering and promoting this prominent major among Palestinian graduates to meet the increasing demand for highly skilled mathematics teachers and researchers, and to serve related technical fields.
Aims of the Program:
- Graduate specialized and skilled academic staff in mathematics
- Encourage candidates to study at home country while working
- Promote and foster scientific research among university graduates
- Provide the convenience of qualified candidates to study at closer proximity to home
The mathematics Master's program is a general mathematics program composed of 36 credits hours. It consists of two streams: the thesis and the comprehensive exam.
The academic plan has three parts:
- Compulsory requirements (18 cr.): Abstract Algebra (1), Applied Mathematics (1), Real Analysis, Complex Analysis (1), Probability Theory. and Numerical Analysis
- Electives (12 cr.): the student chooses four courses of the electives.
- Either a thesis or two seminars and a comprehensive exam.
Admission Requirements:
The applicant should have a B.Sc. in mathematics or strongly related field with a cumulative average of Good at least in the undergraduate degree.
Career Opportunities:
· Lecturer at universities, community colleges and high schools
· Work at the Directorate of Education in the areas of administration or supervision, and at the Central Bureau of Statistics.
· Opportunity to pursue his/her Ph.D. degree at international universities.
Research Possibilities:
The program provides the right environment in conducting research under the supervision of skilled professors and researchers in the areas of applied, theoretical, and computational mathematics.
Statistics and Success Stories:
Over the years, the program has graduated scores of Math MS graduates from all over the country. Our graduates have shown a high degree of excellence at their work place either in the academic or private sectors. Many of our graduates have joined Ph.D. programs at the USA, European, and other international universities. The program in partnership with the university was instrumental in hosting the Third Palestinian Conference in Modern Trends in Mathematics and Physics which was a success story in the region by its participants (locally and internationally) and the quality of research presented. Our MS students played an important role in organizing and presenting their research at this scientific event. Last but not least, the excellence in research at our MS math program has been highlighted in which three of our MS thesis at PPU won the Abuihlail Prize in Mathematics as the best graduate math research at the national level.
