Applied Chemistry

Program Overview

Chemistry is one of the fields in the forefront of the current technology revolution and , as such, it plays a crucial role in solving many of problems faced by today’s society. Chemists work in all facets of live including the development of new drugs for treatment of diseases such as cancer, the creation of better methods for the production of food, clothing and shelters, and the discovery of environment friendly energy sources . They also work in solving problems such as acid rain , ozone depletion and climate change.

The Bachelor of science degree program in applied chemistry at PPU was launched in September,2010. The program is available for students who intend to pursue graduate studies, secondary school teaching, or a professional career in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry. The programs provides a strong background in the modern areas of chemistry with emphasis on hands-on laboratory work. It also provides the opportunity for exceptionally talented students to conduct independent research under the guidance of the faculty .The program also prepares students for further education in health and environmental sciences, and biotechnology.

Program Goals

I. General Goals:

1.      Provide rigorous education in the fundamental areas of chemical knowledge and experimentation. The program is sufficiently flexible in its electives to provide an excellent preparation for careers in different areas of chemistry.

2.      Provide the local society with high quality professionals to participate in development of local chemical and related industries by enhancing the quality and solving problems faced by these industries .

II . Specific Goals:

1.      To provide students with practical and theoretical knowledge in different pure and applied chemistry fields.

2.      To provide students with the skills that enable them to deal with  problems and issues related to their specialty and give innovative solutions to these problems.

3.      To provide students with knowledge and skills needed for teaching chemistry in schools.

4.      To give students a solid background to be able to continue their graduate studies in fields related to chemistry , or be actively involved in scientific research.

5.      To provide students with different soft skills such as communication skills, adoptability, teamwork and collaborative, problem solving, critical observation.

The four years study program of applied chemistry include theoretical and practical courses in different fields of pure, applied and industrial chemistry. The program is designed to meet the modern international educational requirements and the local society needs in having highly qualified graduates in chemical food and related industries.

Graduates of this program are able to find jobs in a wide spectrum of professions such as:

1-     Production sectors in chemical, pharmaceutical food and other industries (plastics, cosmetics, …etc)

2-     Quality control units in related industries.

3-     Trade companies dealing with chemicals equipment ,... etc.

4-     State sectors in ministries of health , industry and  environment.

5-     Research institutes and units.

6-     Teaching in schools.

Intended Learning Outcome

Upon graduation, students should be able to:

 A. Chemistry Related Knowledge

1. Recognize fundamentals of chemistry including structure, reactivity and properties of chemical substances, and the states of matter.

2. Explain the essential facts, principles and theories across the four principal areas of chemistry ( analytical, organic, inorganic and physical).

B. Chemistry Related Intellectual Skills

 1. Formulate and analyze a wide range of analytical and synthetic chemical problems by applying chemical principles.

2. Analyze and interpret experimental data, critically assess data in literature and extract useful data from it.

3. Carry out directed research by selecting appropriate topics and procedures, and presenting the results.

4. Demonstrate appreciation of chemical topics relevance to social and daily life such as environmental issues, and arouse audience’s interest in chemistry.

5. Use a global perspective in conjunction with knowledge of science to view issues in chemistry.

 C. Chemistry Related Practical Skills

1. Assess and manage the risks of chemical substances and laboratory procedures by evaluating their potential impact on the environment.

2. Conduct standard laboratory procedures involved in synthetic and instrumental work.

3. Operate a range of chemical instrumentation with adequate hands-on experiences.

D. Transferable Skills

1. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with professionals and/or lay audience.

2. Demonstrate information technology skills, especially in the areas of information retrieval, literature searching and use of library databases.

3. Work independently and collaborate effectively with other people in a team.

 4. Self-evaluate their own learning progress, and develop motivation and learning skills that are necessary for his future career.
